first use of flashmeeting

When the tool became the problem

During the first Venus Summer School Learning Cafe we experienced a flashmeeting where students of different locations and a moderator discussed about the topics: Web 2.0 in business: benefits and problems.

The feeling that we had at the end of discussion is that it is happened what usually we think the web 2.0 technologies should avoid to happen.

Audio problems, technical problems have concentrated the attention of some participants on the “Tools”, and they were non sufficiently concentrated to focus on the “Topic”.
They don’t feel free to speak each others because of the “Media” that they were using catalysed their attention.
Also we have to consider that there is a natural, initial shyness that is concerned to talk in another language and to know that the session is recorded. For example, our students in Rome have a ‘bad feeling’ about flashmeeting as a tool, because they experienced problems with headset and and microphones and also we cannot hear what the Leuven participants say for all the meeting, and this give them the idea that this technology is not good, not stable.
For what concern the topic discussed, I think that all the students from all the locations agree on main benefits that the introduction of web 2.0 in business should give, but probably the context of a first experience with a  videoconference tool and the time constraint ( 7-8 minutes for the presentations + 12-13 min. for discussion) made very difficult for the students to reflect about the topic.
